Patients should continue taking statin medication as prescribed, despite warnings from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the NPS believes.

Responding to the FDA’s warning that statin medication had been linked to reports of memory problems and a small increased risk of diabetes, Karen Kaye, NPS head of programs the benefits of the drugs outweighed the risks.

“Statins lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk of these events,” she said.
