I've found it odd that I developed acne as soon as I started anti-psychotics. I was on olanzapine (zyprexa), aripiprazole (abilify) and now quetiapine (seroquel) - I'm on 700mg of this. I'm 20 and I've been to a dermatologist who says I have moderate-severe acne. I've tried every drug my doctor can give me and now the dermatologist is taking over but my acne just stays the same. Can anti-psychotics be causing this? Can I counteract it somehow? Cheers also my diet is fine
I've been on all three of those drugs at one point or another and I've never had acne as a result. Taking the anti psychotics may have been stressful to you and this may have caused your acne. I don't think your diet would have caused your acne, rather that your stress has caused it. I've researched a couple of sites and everyone says that there's no link between acne and antipsychotics. So I would think that it is stress rather than anti psychotics. Hope this helps :)
Hello, Its hard to say how any drug can affect anyone, as everybody is different and whereas you have noticed that you have developed acne on this drug the next person could find that the same drug clears their acne, its strange I know but its similar to myself, I and a friend both take prozac and for me it makes me more tired and I sleep more but for her she can barely sleep at night! The affects different hormones have on people do vary. If it bothers you too much you should ask a doc if you can possibly change to a different medication and you may find it will disappear, and if you find you have more acne around the time of your period ect it could be the affect the drug has on levels of hormones etc x
