US regulators have warned that use of statins may be linked to an increased risk of diabetes or cognitive impairment.
A US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety communication advising of new warnings to be added to statin labels has gathered widespread coverage in Australian media sources today.
The FDA’s advisory alert said statin product labels in the US would now include warnings that there was evidence of temporary memory loss and confusion resulting from statin use; reports of increases in blood sugar levels associated with use of the drugs; and rare reports of serious liver problems in statin users.
The regulator advised that health professionals should conduct liver enzyme tests on patients before statin therapy was initiated, and as clinically indicated thereafter.
